Washington: A group of Khalistan supporters gathered in front of the Indian Embassy here and tried to incite violence. But the timely intervention of the US Secret Service and the local police prevented a repetition of the incidents at the missions in London and San Francisco. Separatist Sikhs gathered near the Indian Embassy in Washington DC on Saturday and hurled abuses at India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu and publicly threatened him. Sandhu was not at the embassy at the time of the protest.
Some protesters at the protest site were seen inciting other protesters to join the violence and break windows and glasses of the building. Anticipating things could get out of control, the Secret Service and local police quickly deployed additional forces and at least three police vans were parked in front of the embassy. At one point, five protesters quickly crossed the road and reached the pole near the embassy that held the tricolor, but Secret Service personnel immediately arrived and asked them to move to the designated area for the demonstration.
It appeared that the protesters had come with the intention of causing incidents like damage to Indian properties at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and Indian High Commission in London. A PTI reporter saw separatists bringing two bundles of wooden sticks, which were kept in the garden with the Mahatma Gandhi statue in front of the embassy.
